making a quilt is a very detailed process! ...
- Materials on average for a queen size quilt start at $200, and labor goes from there-
first- the quilt top is pieced or appliqued into the final design....
Then, a backing fabric is then laid onto the floor- and then another layer is laid over that- it being the batting. the batting is the soft fluffy stuff that gives a quilt that "quilty" look.... I use only 100% cotton batting in my quilts- organic as well as HEMP batting is also availabke for a slightly higher price. Cotton and hemp batting keeps the quilt cool in the summer, and warm in the winter! -
Ok- at about this point, the quilt top is then laid over the batting- making a quilt "sandwich" - the entire quilt is laid out onto the floor--- i then spend about 2 days pinning the layers together with sfaety pins... about 800 safety pins go into pinning a quilt!
Then - the final touch.... The quilt is then machine and/or hand quilted by me--- The act of quilting is sewing all the layers together in a quilt- sometime people confuse that term with patchworking- which is peiceing of fabric into a design.
Quilting a quilt can take up to 2 weeks- because its such a big peiece to maneuver into a machine or sew by hand. I take my time in seeing that every stitch is set and willl last you forever. Quilting is done no more wide that 5" from another seam line---- if a quilt isnt quilted properly, or not at all- it literally looks like a bag of potatoes around the 2nd wash- the quilt turns into a bag of batting! -
the whole process of quilt making is very lengthly- it takes about 1-2 months to finsih a quilt.... |
